Maine Surf, Sand, and Peeps

Yes Virginia, there are some sandy beaches in Maine.  Although these sand beaches may not be well known to non-State-of-Mainers, I suspect that they are well known among the “peep” community.

I have a reasonable guess as to the identity of these birds, and I’m probably in error to refer to them as peeps.

Maybe I should have called this squib, “Surf, Sand, Sand Dollars, and Sanderlings”.  However, I suspect that this beach is indeed a favorite stopover point for fall and spring migrating “peeps”.

This visit to the beach took place on August 29, 2010, so these birds may have been in transition from their summer plumage to their winter plumage.

Do you know where this beach is located?  It is not Popham Beach, but it is close to Popham Beach.

See Bob Duchesne’s Maine Birding Trail: The Official Guide to More Than 260 Accessible Sites (2009; Down East Books) for information about Site “p” (page 55) with a vicinity map on page 47.

Have fun, and enjoy the “sand, surf, and peeps”.
