Arid Saline Wetland Course Coachella Valley, California

2-day Field Tours on:

  • 13 – 14 January 2014
  • 17 – 18 February 2014

Course Description:
James W. Teaford will lead field visits to selected sites in the Coachella Valley, CA, to discuss concepts, considerations, and identification of field indicators of hydric soils, hydrophytic vegetation, and wetland hydrology as they apply to wetland and non-wetland situations under conditions of saline and sodic soils in arid areas throughout the western USA.  Each tour group will be limited to approximately 20 to 25 participants.

Field Trip Topics:
As we encounter them, we will discuss such things as:  algae crusts; “white alkali” and “black alkali”; aquatic fauna; “redox” bacteria; salt bitterns; cyanobacterial crusts; salt crusts; ferrous sulfide; field indicators of hydric soils; soil fissures and piping; halophytes; wetland hydrology; hydrophytes; wetland mitigation opportunities; phreatophytes; shallow soil cracks; saline and sodic soils; Salton Sea history; vegetation sampling techniques for the herbaceous and shrub layers; and, xerophytes.

Field Notes:
Each student will receive a cd with notebook materials in pdf format (color photos and text) keyed to the sites and phenomena that we observe and discuss.  Also, I will make available pertinent Corps of Engineers’ publications on the subject in pdf format.

What to bring:
Bring your binoculars, cameras, plant ID books, and personal field notebooks as you should have ample opportunities to use them.

Transportation:
Transportation to and from the field sites will be on your own, but each day we will consolidate people and cars to try to minimize the size of the “caravan”.

Lunch:
Please plan on bringing your own lunch, snacks, and drinks, as the field sites are in rural locations.

Lodging:
Please plan on making your own lodging arrangements in the Coachella Valley area, such as in Indio, Coachella, or Palm Desert.  I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express, 74675 Highway 111 Palm Desert, CA 92260.

Registration Fee:
$650 for an individual registration;
$600 each for 2 people from the same company;
$550 each for 3 or more people from the same company
This two-day course can be combined with the three-day Desert Washes and Waters in the Coachella Valley Area, California Course for a discounted registration fee of $1,200.
