Desert Washes and Waters in the Coachella Valley Area

3-day Field Tours on:

  • 15 – 17 January 2014
  • 19 – 21 February 2014

Course Description:
James W. Teaford will lead field visits to selected sites in the Coachella Valley Area, CA, to discuss concepts, considerations, and identification of field indicators of low flow channel, active floodplain, 100-year floodplain (“low terrace”), “upland” habitat, hard playa, and soft playa situations as they apply to waters/WOUS determinations in arid areas throughout the western USA.  Each tour group will be limited to approximately 20 to 25 participants.

Field Trip Topics:
As we encounter them, we will discuss such things as low flow channels; active floodplains; 100-year floodplains (“low terraces”); “upland” habitats; eroded shelf features (i.e., “shelving”); cobbles and boulders in shelf soils; argillic horizons and “red” soil materials in shelf soils; desert pavement and desert varnish in shelf and upland landscape positions; soil crust features; presence or absence of salt features; desert wash vegetation; and, other topics that arise.

Field Notes:
Each student will receive a cd with notebook materials in pdf format (color photos and text) keyed to the sites and phenomena that we observe and discuss.  Also, I will make available pertinent Corps of Engineers’ publications on the subject in pdf format.
